Heart Of Darkness

Day 1 : Pages 3-11

"forwith a change came over the waters, and the serenity became less brilliant but more profound"(5).

"...and to him the meaning of an episode was not inside like a kernel but outside, enveloping the tale which brought it out only as a glow brings out a haze, in the likeness of one of these misty halos that sometimes are made visible by the spectral illumination of moonshine"(7).

the narrator is initally starting his journey on board with numerous different shipmates. the scenery is described to intensify the beginning of his journey. Through that description he identifies the captain and the outlook the captain has on life and the importance of the journey. He understands that there is more depth and truth to the captain that his initial impression led him to believe.

Day 2 : Pages 12-20

"i arrived in a city that always makes me think of a whited sepulchre; prejudice no doubt"(14).

"i am not such a fool as i look, quoth plato for his disciples"(17).

the captain of the ship intiates his crew by telling them of his original journey. His first assignment, and the road that he embarked on. The initial impressions that was forced upon him was uncertain and incorrect. He was engaging in a new era and a new activity. Yet, he knew that what he was hiding beneath his skin was way more advanced then the common people were believing.

Day 3 : Pages 21-29

"for a time i would feel that i belonged to a world of straightforward facts; but the feeling would not last long"(21).

"i foresaw that in the blinding sunshine of that land in which i would become acquainted with a flabby, pretending, weak-eyed devil of rapicious and pitiless folly"(25).

When he goes to meet the first employer he has, he loses the place to where he is going. Everything that is around him seems honest and simplistic yet he can see the underlying depth in the conduct. He gains understanding that the outward impression that is seen, is exactly that. It has no true meaning.

Day 4 : 30-38

"his eyes, of the usual blue, were perhaps remarkably cold, and he certainly could make his glance fall on one as trenchant and heavy as an axe"(34).

"he was a chattering idiot"(36).

The narrators first impression of his new boss is not a good one. He sees that through his bland nature there is negativity and he call it from the beginning. His description is negative before the man even speaks and once he does, it gets worse. The only words the narrator has in description of him are insults. Therefore, we are given a premature glance at what he is about to deal with.
